Simple Proofs of Classical Theorems in Discrete Geometry via the Guth-Katz Polynomial Partitioning Technique

چکیده
Recently Guth and Katz [16] invented, as a step in their nearly complete solution of Erdős’s distinct distances problem, a new method for partitioning finite point sets in R, based on the Stone–Tukey polynomial ham-sandwich theorem. We apply this method to obtain new and simple proofs of two well known results: the Szemerédi–Trotter theorem on incidences of points and lines, and the existence of spanning trees with low crossing numbers. Since we consider these proofs particularly suitable for teaching, we aim at self-contained, expository treatment. We also mention some generalizations and extensions, such as the Pach–Sharir bound on the number of incidences with algebraic curves of bounded degree.

Distinct Distance Estimates and Low Degree Polynomial Partitioning
We give a shorter proof of a slightly weaker version of a theorem fromGuth and Katz (Ann Math 181:155–190, 2015): we prove that if L is a set of L lines in R3 with at most L1/2 lines in any low degree algebraic surface, then the number of r -rich points of L is L(3/2)+εr−2. This result is one of the main ingredients in the proof of the distinct distance estimate in Guth and Katz (2015). With ou...
متن کاملPolynomial Partitioning on Varieties of Codimension Two and Point-Hypersurface Incidences in Four Dimensions
We present a polynomial partitioning theorem for finite sets of points in the real locus of a complex algebraic variety of codimension at most two. This result generalizes the polynomial partitioning theorem on the Euclidean space of Guth and Katz, and its extension to hypersurfaces by Zahl and by Kaplan, Matoušek, Sharir and Safernová. We also present a bound for the number of incidences betwe...
متن کاملChapter 6 : The Elekes - Sharir - Guth - Katz Framework
Guth and Katz’s seminal work on the number of distinct distances [4] was based on several novel ideas. One can regard their proof of as consisting of four main tools: (i) A reduction from the distinct distances problem to a problem about line intersections in R. This part is usually referred to as the Elekes-Sharir framework. We will refer to it as the Elekes-Sharir-Guth-Katz framework, for rea...
متن کاملMultilevel polynomial partitions and simplified range searching
The polynomial partitioning method of Guth and Katz [arXiv:1011.4105] has numerous applications in discrete and computational geometry. It partitions a given n-point set P ⊂ R using the zero set Z(f) of a suitable d-variate polynomial f . Applications of this result are often complicated by the problem, what should be done with the points of P lying within Z(f)? A natural approach is to partiti...
